Pangong Lake, Ladakh – India’s most Beautiful Lake

Pangong Lake which is also known as Pangong Tso is one of the most beautiful lakes in India. It is located in the Himalayas and is as long as 134 km long. The lake extends from India to China. The lake is situated at a height of 4350 mtrs and is one of the best tourist attractions of India. The majestic beauty of this lake attracts people from all over India and abroad. Pangong Lake – The most beautiful Lake in India 

The most beautiful thing about this lake is that it changes its colors. The lake is in the Himalayan range and it is approximately at a distance of 140 km from Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. The lake gets its name Pangong from a Tibetan word Banggong Co which means an enchanted and narrow lake.

Camps are the only option that you can consider if you are looking for an accommodation somewhere close to the lake. Camping is allowed on the shores of the lake. It is worth mentioning that the region has quite limited options to stay near the lake and even in the surrounding areas. However you can also look for Lukung.

They offer some great and decent camping options with Eco Huts. The other option for accommodation is in Spangmik. These accommodations are standard hotels with basic facilities. Even the locals offer accommodation. The only thing you might not like is the locals have shared toilets outside of their homes.

Where to Eat ?

Unfortunately Pangong Lake has quite limited options when it comes to eating. It is advisable to carry your own food while visiting the lake. The locals also offer quality food which is healthy as well.

There are a few eateries around the lake but they are pretty expensive. So, most of the visitors eat from homestays at Spangmik or from the tents where they camp at. So these are the only options left when it comes to eating, unless you carry your own food.

Best time to visit Pangong Lake

Pangong Lake should be visited anytime between June to September. Since winters are quite harsh in this area and the lake freezes. Hence, the best time to visit Pangong Lake is during the months of June, July, August and September.

How to reach Pangong Lake ?

Most people normally reach the lake via the Leh to Pangong Tso route. This route would generally take you 6 hours. However the actual time may depend upon how many breaks you take during the trip. Below is the route that you should take:

Leh – Karu- Sakti- Chang La- Durbuk- Tagnste-  Lukung-  Spangmik-  Pangong Lake

There are also some great spots which you can visit during this journey. Hemis and Shey monasteries are few of the major attractions that you must visit. The route has very well made and maintained roads and you will surely like them. It is advised to take a two day trip to Pangong Tso so that you can halt at Leh before you actually head out to the lake. This will immensely help you acclimatize your body to the high altitude.
