It is said that the adversities have two types of effects on people. They can either turn you into a hostile and angry person or they could turn you into someone like Sindhutai Sapkal. Sindhutai Sapkal is not a name that is known in every house hold but it ought to be because the example she has set is hard to be found in any part of the world.
Sindhutai Sapkal was born on November 14, 1948 in a family that was very poor and lived in the small village named Pimpri Meghe in Wardha district of Maharashtra. She wanted to study and her father was in strong support of this but due to her marriage at the tender age of 10 to a 30 year old man she could not continue her studies. The man she got married to was an abusive husband. He threw her out of the house when she was 20 and nine months pregnant. On the same night she gave birth to a girl and left the village with the idea of suicide storming her head but instead she decided to live.
She begged for a living and in due course of time she realized that there are so any small kids in a similar situation as hers. Her realization led her to adopt those kids as hers and since then she adopts all the kids she sees abandoned by their parents.
In order to eliminate any partiality with the other kids she gave her biological daughter to an orphanage named Shrimant Dagdu Sheth Halwai in Pune.
These adopted children are treated by Sindhutai as her very own and are not given for adoption. Out of more than 1400 children adopted by Sindhutai many of them have become doctors, lawyers and engineers. One of the children of Sindhutai has made a documentary on her life while her biological daughter runs an orphanage herself.
Sindhutai also known as “Mother of Orphans” has been felicitated with as many as 500 awards. With all the awards she received certain amount of money that she used to build homes for her children. This devoted woman is determined to give shelter to all the children who have no one to go to. She still has the same kind of life and earns her meals on day to day basis. Now, she delivers lectures to earn a living for her children.
Due to the immense compassion in her heart Sindhutai happens to be have a family that is huge with as many as 207 son-in-laws, 36 daughter-in-laws and more than 1000 grand children. In this family there is also her husband who had abandoned her at the time of need. He came to her apologizing for his wrong doings. She, being a mother to all, adopted him too and now introduces him as his eldest child.
Sindhutai Sapkal is a personification of love and compassion that is hard to find these days. Her amazing zeal to provide for the homeless kids who were abandoned even by their family has a lot of lessons to learn from. She is the epitome of love as well as determination and an inspiration to all those who get depressed by small problems in their lives.
