Kumaoni singer Pappu Karki die in a road mishap

Well known Kumaoni folk artist and singer Pappu Karki is no more.

He succumbed to his injuries in a road accident in the early hours of June 9. Karki was killed on the spot, it is learnt. He was on the way back from a concert with five others when the incident took place.

The team was returning from a remote place of the State named Okhalkanda after a concert when they met with an accident. Their car tossed and turned on the road and got damaged, killing him instantly. The place of accident is about 40 km from Nainital.

It is said that the driver lost control of the car, which ultimately went turtle and fell into a gorge. It was at around 5 AM. The passers-by called for an ambulance, which took an hour to reach and only then the survivors could be taken to a hospital.

Besides Karki, Rajendra Gonia (26) and Pushkar Gonia (25) too lost their lives. Two other passengers, named Ajay Arya and Jugal Kishore, have been admitted to the hospital and said to be responding to the treatment.

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Trivendra Singh Rawat, condoled the bereaved families on Twitter and expressed his grief over losing the life of talented singers.

It is said that road accidents in Uttarakhand have killed 77 persons and left more than 100 injured in just the first month of the year. Though 133 road accidents had been recorded in the state in January, the highest number of casualties, i.e 23 cases were reported from Udham Singh Nagar district alone. Haridwar had 15 deaths while Nainital recorded 11 deaths. In this period only in Dehradun, 10 people were killed in road accidents.

ADG law and order Ashok Kumar, IPS claims that rash driving, drunk driving and overloading were the main reasons behind most of the road accidents. “The accident data for the last three years points to speeding, drunk driving and overloading as main factors behind road accidents,” he said.

He informed that several measures have been put in place to put a check on recurrence of such incidents. An order has been issued to all district police heads to ensure that a superintendent of police rank police officer needs to visit the accident site where two or more causalities have taken place. It is said that last year alone, 942 people had lost their lives in road accidents there. During the year of 2016, these roads had claimed 962 lives.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway, of late, has been in the news for its miraculous de-congestion of Delhi traffic, but now its here for wrong news too. A group of seven members of a family were killed in an accident there.

It also rendered nine others injured in an accident, which was caused at Palwal area on Tuesday. It is said that the incident occurred as the driver of their van doused himself at the steering. The exact location of the accident was in Haryana’s Palwal district. The family members were on there way from Mohali to the pilgrimage city of Mathura.

The Superintendent of Police, Palwal, has clarified that it is found that it was a case of sheer negligence on the part of the driver. Since he was feeling sleepy, nevertheless, he continued to drive, and ultimately fell asleep at the wheel itself, the SP added.

The driver, who miraculously survived, told the police that the accident took place in the early hours at about 4:30. A container truck seemed to have hit the van. The persons occupying the rear portion of the van were killed on the spot. The injured are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the city of Delhi, Mathura and Palwal.

The deceased have been identified as Devi Singh, Om Vati, her son Jatin, Vijay Pal, his daughter Seema, Ananya and a friend named Vijay Pal. They were on their way to their native village in Mathura district to attend the wedding of Devi Singh’s daughter which was scheduled for June 20, 2018.

It can be said that this is the first accident on newly inaugurated Eastern Peripheral Expressway. It was inaugurated on May 27 only by PM Narendra Modi.

The state of the art expressway is India’s first smart and green 6-lane highway. The highway aimed at not only decongesting Delhi-NCR and connect important regions of Palwal, Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, it is also marked as an eco-friendly highway. The highway has been constructed in a record time of 500 days while it had a schedule of 910 days. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway aimed to divert more than two lakh vehicles which pass daily through the national capital to this bypass.

The expressway was earlier known as KGP expressway (Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal) and offers signal-free connectivity between Palwal, Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad to Ghaziabad. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway which is stretched to about 135 km in various States is, in fact, associated with the Peripheral Expressway Project connect two highways, namely EPE and Western Peripheral Expressway. The Peripheral Expressway Project aims to connect national highway number one and number two from the Western and Eastern sides of the state of Delhi.
