What is DigiLocker and How to upload documents on DigiLocker ?

Digilocker / Digital Locker : Paperless, secured and free locker to Indian citizens

Do you remember how you struggled to get your photocopy of marks-sheets, degrees and relevant papers attested by a gazetted officer ? First go to your neighborhood  photocopy shop, make copies and pay him, then request some of your friend to search for a gazetted officer, whom he might have acquaintance with. If you are lucky, you can find out one, but he may be very busy, will ask you to come later, or if kind enough, he will spare few minutes to attest your certificates. If you live in some remote areas and there is no government office nearby, your predicament could extend to the whole day or days!

Introduction to DigiLocker

The decision of the Government of India  under Digital India Programme to get away with attestation of the documents for employment, availing of various services and education was hailed by one and all. A step further, with the introduction of Digilocker—an another initiative by the Prime Minister of India himself, even the self-attested copies of the required certificates have also been dispensed with. It will smoothen the procedure, will save environment by saving tree on reams of papers, used in the documents, wastage on courier charges and waste of manpower on such an unproductive exercise. Moreover, it will free people from the clutches of corruption by the uncanny government officers.

The paperless records: The facility will be available to store—

  • Certificates of Educational Qualifications, Degrees and certificates of Universities
  • Date of Birth Certificate, Born and Death Certificates, Driving License, Ration Card, PAN Card,
  • Land Records for farmers and land owners, E-registry of property papers
  • Filling up of online applications on job portals
  • The certificates issued by any other Government Department.

What is Digilocker ?

Digilocker is a service launched by the Government of India which offers free personal, secured space upto 1 GB for storing their important documents issued by the government to a resident India. These documents like PAN card, Voter ID card, Aadhaar Card, College Degrees and School Certificates/Marksheets, Ration Cards etc.  would be linked to the concerned person’s Aadhar number. The holder of the digital locker account will get these individual certificates as e-signed verified paperless whenever one will require them. He can generate, link the document  with the required link in a click easily.

How to Sign Up for DigiLocker Online with Aadhaar ?

First of all you need to have an Aadhaar Number and a registered Mobile Number with Aadhaar Card to Sign Up for a DigiLocker.

Step 1 : Visit the Digilocker Website (https://digilocker.gov.in)

Step 2 : Enter your Aadhaar Number and the text as provided in the image.

Step 3 : Click on Sign Up to receive OTP(One Time Password) on your Mobile Number and Email Address registered with your Aadhaar Card.

Step 4 : Enter the OTP received on your Mobile Phone and/or Email Address and Click on Validate OTP. As soon as the OTP gets validated, your Digilocker is ready to be used.

How to Upload Documents in DigiLocker ?

After successfully signing in to your DigiLocker Account, you need to follow the process mentioned below to upload your documents in DigiLocker :

Step 1 : Visit the “My Certificate ” Section

Step 2 : Select the Type of Document you want to upload from the list of Documents mentioned in a Drop Down Menu (Pan Card, HSC Certificate, SSC Certificate, Voter ID etc)

Step 3 : Name your document as desired.

Step 4 : Provide more details about the document based on the type of document uploaded.

Step 5 : Browse the file in your Computer or Mobile Device which is to be uploaded (File size should not exceed 1 MB and the format of the file should only be pdf, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp, gif)

Step 6 : Enter the description for the document uploaded (Description Length should not exceed 50 Words).

Step 7 : Click on Upload Button and your document will be uploaded

Step 8 : You can now check your uploaded document in “Uploaded Documents” Section.
