Hamirpur: A new government medical college has started functioning in Himachal Pradesh today. The central government accorded its nod to the state government to admit 100 MBBS students for the current academic session in the Hamirpur Medical College.
The State Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda were also chief guests at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the 250-bed hospital facility in the same college. A residential block for the faculty was also inaugurated on the occasion.
Describing the feat of his government, the CM has said that after functioning of the Hamirpur Medical College, the number of government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh has increased to six with the availability of 600 MBBS seats in the state.
He thanked the Union government for providing liberal financial assistance which was needed to make it fully equipped. It is said that keeping in view the six medical colleges in the government sector and one in private sector, around 750 doctors will be available in the Himachal Pradesh in the ensuing years. It will help in meeting the demand for specialists and medical officers in the hill area where peoples’ needs and aspirations are higher.
The Union Health Minister Mr Nadda, speaking on the occasion said that his government is already on an expansion spree in healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh. Despite lesser population, four medical colleges and services of a premier health institute like AIIMS had also been given to the state.
Dialysis facility to the needy patients had also been made available in eight districts of Himachal Pradesh. Moreover, kidney patients need not go to PGI, Chandigarh or any other place for further investigations and treatment, he claimed.
Mr Nadda, who himself hails the hill state, said the Union government was embarking upon the expansion of health services in the state.
Three districts of the state– Chamba, Hamirpur and Nahan were identified for establishment of new medical colleges.
Grant of Rs 322.51 crore has been released by the union government for the establishment of these three medical colleges. Further funds to the tune of Rs 163 crore will also be released in the current financial year, he said.
