Travel light or pay more in domestic flights now

Indigo, Spicejet and GoAir hikes excess baggage charges by up to 33%

Baggage in domestic flights over 15 kg will now cost much more in various airlines of India. Almost all private airlines have upwardly revised booking charges for excess baggage. If you have not done that, you may have shell out a fee that will be paid at airports.

Except, the Government-owned Air India, no domestic economy flyers allow up to 25 kg of check-in baggage free of charge.

Some popular airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir now charge up to Rs 400 per kg for each kilo beyond the allowed 15 kg from domestic passengers at airports. Though these rates are applicable to those who have not pre-booked their excess baggage.

IndiGo has increased excess baggage charges on its domestic flights by 33 per cent with immediate effect. Its charges for pre-booking 5, 10, 15 and 30 kg (beyond the free 15 kg) on its domestic routes will now calculate to Rs 1,900; Rs 3,800; Rs 5,700 and Rs 11,400, respectively.

It may be recalled that in August 2017, IndiGo had increased its pre-booking charges at Rs 1,425; Rs 2,850; Rs 4,275 and Rs 8,550, on the slots of 5, 10, 15, and 30 kgs excess baggage respectively.

Those flyers who did not care to pre-book were instructed to pay Rs 300 per kg for each kilo beyond the allowed limit of 15 kg. These charges now stand up by 33%.

IndiGo and SpiceJet had revised their charges from June 22, while GoAir hiked from last Saturday.

Similarly, now SpiceJet pre-booking charges for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 kg for domestic flyers will be Rs 1,600; Rs 3,200; Rs 4,800; Rs 6,400 and Rs 9,600, respectively. those travellers who ignored pre-booking of their baggage will shell out Rs 400 per kg extra for each kilo beyond 15 kg. GoAir excess baggage charges are in synchronization with IndiGo’s policy on excess baggage.
