Link your PAN with Aadhaar by June 30, warns IT department

Now you will need to link Aadhaar and PAN to be able to process your annual income tax returns of the current year. The IT department says it should be done till June 30, or you will be treated as a violator of IT return and it won’t be processed.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has clarified that linking of PAN card and Aadhaar number is a prerequisite for filing ITR. Without it, ITR will not be treated as filed.

It has been made compulsory to link it by financial year end by the taxation department earlier. Under the modified order, the deadline has been revised now to June 30, 2018.

Even in the year 2017, the linking of Pan and Aadhaar Card was told to be applicable on July 1 2017. At that time, the people who filed their income tax returns before July 1, 2017 the deadline for them was again extended to March 31, 2018. It now stands extended to June 30, 2018.

The department says that the linkage is being done as per the provisions of the law. It is mentioned in the section 139 AA (2) of the IT Act that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his or her Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. There is no exception of the provision to anyone.

The last date order from the IT department has come in the wake of the apex court direction. It has directed the department for the extension of the March 31 deadline for this linkage of Aadhaar number with various services. The Supreme Court says that the deadline of the directive should be raised since its final judgment is given on the issue of aadhar and PAN.

Experts believe that no one will be able to file ITR this year, without linking the two. CBDT circular emphatically mentions it to do by June 30, 2018. It is also mandatory to quote your Aadhaar number in the ITR form on the dotted lines.

Please note that Non-resident Indians (NRI) are not covered in the ambit of linking Aadhaar and PAN card.
