BSNL to launch 5G services in India in tandem with Global launch

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited– the government-owned telecom company will launch its ultra-high-speed fifth-generation (5G) services soon.

An official spokesman said that the BSNL is aggressively coordinating with companies like Nokia, Coriant and ZTE which are leading in 5G technology. It aims to unveil the consumer services starting in 2020 or the earliest.

BSNL is gearing to start its 5G services in sync with their global launch, BSNL Chief General Manager Anil Jain has said.

Speaking at the Mobile Device Summit he explained that the telco would make optimum of the opportunity of the 5G spectrum, whereas it could not adopt the 3G and 4G technologies, as per market requirements.

The telecom group TMA, believes that to get the success of 5g technology with telcos it is an important precondition that before the commercial launch of 5G services, the availability of 5G-enabled smartphones is ensured.

BSNL and Japan’s technology group have signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) to collaborate on creating a 5G test bed in India.

The collaboration to develop an end-to-end 5G mobile ecosystem is of utmost importance. So, In March last year, a Finish gear company Nokia has already entered into an arrangement with BSNL to transfer its global experience in the 5G-related industry. It will focus on the software-defined network (SDN) and multi-access edge computing.

The BSNL has also partnered with the US-based packet optical and mobile routing solutions company Coriant last year. It is studying about 5G-based industrial internet applications for commercial customers.

The BSNL has asked the permission of airwaves in the premium 700 Mhz band from the Department of Telecom (DoT). this will facilitate the launching of its 5G. A DoT panel claims that airwaves in the desired bands, i.e. 700 Mhz, 3.5 GHz, 24 GHz and 28 GHz can be procured immediately for the 5G service.
