Accident on eastern expressway killed seven in Palwal

Eastern Peripheral Expressway, of late, has been in the news for its miraculous de-congestion of Delhi traffic, but now its here for wrong news too. A group of seven members of a family were killed in an accident there.

It also rendered nine others injured in an accident, which was caused at Palwal area on Tuesday. It is said that the incident occurred as the driver of their van doused himself at the steering. The exact location of the accident was in Haryana’s Palwal district. The family members were on there way from Mohali to the pilgrimage city of Mathura.

The Superintendent of Police, Palwal, has clarified that it is found that it was a case of sheer negligence on the part of the driver. Since he was feeling sleepy, nevertheless, he continued to drive, and ultimately fell asleep at the wheel itself, the SP added.

The driver, who miraculously survived, told the police that the accident took place in the early hours at about 4:30. A container truck seemed to have hit the van. The persons occupying the rear portion of the van were killed on the spot. The injured are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the city of Delhi, Mathura and Palwal.

The deceased have been identified as Devi Singh, Om Vati, her son Jatin, Vijay Pal, his daughter Seema, Ananya and a friend named Vijay Pal. They were on their way to their native village in Mathura district to attend the wedding of Devi Singh’s daughter which was scheduled for June 20, 2018.

It can be said that this is the first accident on newly inaugurated Eastern Peripheral Expressway. It was inaugurated on May 27 only by PM Narendra Modi.

The state of the art expressway is India’s first smart and green 6-lane highway. The highway aimed at not only decongesting Delhi-NCR and connect important regions of Palwal, Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, it is also marked as an eco-friendly highway. The highway has been constructed in a record time of 500 days while it had a schedule of 910 days. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway aimed to divert more than two lakh vehicles which pass daily through the national capital to this bypass.

The expressway was earlier known as KGP expressway (Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal) and offers signal-free connectivity between Palwal, Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad to Ghaziabad. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway which is stretched to about 135 km in various States is, in fact, associated with the Peripheral Expressway Project connect two highways, namely EPE and Western Peripheral Expressway. The Peripheral Expressway Project aims to connect national highway number one and number two from the Western and Eastern sides of the state of Delhi.
