(1) Register FIR

The first thing to do when your Wallet is Lost is to Register an FIR at the nearest Police Station. FIR(First Information Report) should me made as soon as possible. The reason behind this is that you will have a proof that you have lost your purse and the documents in it and you are not liable if someone tries to misuse it. This FIR may also be needed to present when you apply for a duplicate credit card or debit card or any other document.

The second thing to do is blocking your Credit and Debit Cards so that no one can misuse them. There are a lot of cases of people telling about their Credit Cards being stolen and misused. So, even if someone misuses it immediately you are not liable for it because you may have already filed an FIR. These days many Credit and Debit Cards are highly secured and you can not perform any transactions without PIN. However, to avoid any mishap you must Block your Cards as soon as possible.

You can call the Customer Care of your Bank or you can use the Online Portals of your Bank like Netbanking Services to block your Cards.

(3) Re-Apply for Credit and Debit Cards

You must get in touch with your Bank to re-apply for your Lost Debit and Credit Cards. The bank will give you a Form for re-applying for a Debit Card. They may ask you for FIR copy also. The bank may also ask you for a Proof that you are the Account Owner. You can present your Bank Passbook as a Proof. Your Bank Passbook will also act as an Address Proof, for your Credit Card re-issuance. You can keep your Online Statements also with you, in case they are not satisfied, you can present it.

Most of the state have these rules to obtain a Duplicate Driving License. However, it may differ from State to State. You may check at your RTO Office for the Same.

  3. my mom lost her purse in which she had some cash and CGHS card how can we recover CGHS CARD and do we need FIR copy for this .

  4. We suggest you to report an FIR for all the government issued cards which can be misused by any way. If you think your mother’s CGHS Card could be misused by someone, you may report an FIR. However, You must report the same to CGHS department and talk to the department officials for making a dupicate CGHS Card.

  7. Hey, Anirudh, I know you wrote this quite a while ago, but I really REALLY need help with something as you seem to know stuff (:P). A few days ago (on a FRIDAY), my wallet was stolen, and along with it went my debit cards (which I immediately got blocked), my PAN card, railway smart cards and the Driver’s license. Now I waited for the weekend to get over as most offices are closed and so that some good samaritan could find it and contact me for returning it. That didn’t happen. I had already filled up the eFIR (I immediately sought your blog) and I proceeded with the reapplication of the PAN Card and Driver’s License. The problem is that when I submitted both the applications on the coming WEDNESDAY, in the evening I DID receive a call from a person who said that he has found my cards. I haven’t collected them yet, but I am going today. The question is, if the new cards come home, is it still a crime to have both the cards with me? In that case, please advise what can be done.

  8. I HAVE FILED AN F.I.R. AND GONE THROUGH THE PROCEDURES MENTIONED ABOVE,

THE ONLY THING I AM WORRIED ABOUT IS, MIS USE OF MY DOCUMENTS

    ANY SOLUTION TO THAT,

  9. Hi Wasif,

If you have filed an FIR and after that anyone tries to misuse it, then you are not in any kind of trouble.

  10. I lost my wallet with all the above documents in it. I did not file a FIR. I read about how a delay in filing FIR may be taken as intentional disguise of information. So I’m hesitant to do it now. I’m afraid of any misuse of my documents. Is there a way around this?

  11. Hi Shweta,

Dont hesitate! Do file an FIR. You can also file FIR Online in places like Delhi, UP, Haryana, Mumbai etc.

  12. I lost my wallet yesterday in virar local train . Also lost pan card, licence and voter id all bank debit cards,

Otherwise give 300 rs inan hour he said I will give you certificate that doc has lost.

I don’t understand how could they do this who is already in trouble

  13. Hi Saurabh,

Make a Call to the Central Vigilance Toll Free Number for Complaint against the Bribe – 1800-11-0180 this is the number.

  14. Hi Anirudh; I came across your blog recently while searching for procedure for applying for a PAN card which I lost – along with my driver’s license, credit cards, debit card and Aadhar card – during a trip overseas. I did file a complaint with police in the country where I lost my wallet. Obviously, I can not file an FIR in India (I am a citizen and resident of India). Will a copy of my complaint with foreign country police acceptable in lieu of an FIR?
Incidentally, I must congratulate you on your excellent blog which, I am sure, is quite helpful to a lot of people like me. Keep up the good work. Look forward to your response.
