How to book Train Ticket on IRCTC ?
Indian Railways is one of the largest railway network in India. With increasing population of India, it gets tough to stand in Queue for Railway Reservations at the Railway Counters. To ease the procedure and for convenience of tech friendly people Indian railways has the process of Booking Train Tickets Online.

You Can follow the Procedure mentioned below to know how to book Train Ticket Online in India :
Step 1 : Open the IRCTC Website (https://www.irctc.co.in/)
Step 2 : Sign in with your User ID and Password (If you already are registered on IRCTC)
& Login after you get yourself Registered (If you are not registered with IRCTC)
Step 3 : Please Click on Plan My Journey at the top left hand side on this page
Step 4 : For Planning your Journey, you need to Select :
- From Station (Origin Station from where you want to Travel)
- To Station (Destination Station to which you want to Travel)
- Journey Date (Your date of Journey)
- Ticket Type (E-Ticket: You get the Reservation Confirmation on Your E-mail Address and Mobile Number / I-Ticket : You get the Reserved Ticket delivered at your Postal Address ). We recommend you to Select E-Ticket as in this case you get the Ticket Instantly.
Click on Submit
Step 5 : For Example we Plan a Journey from New Delhi to Lucknow on 18/06/2015
To check the Availability of Reservation you need to go to Select the Class by which you want to travel, corresponding to your Train.
So, I Click on Chair Car(CC) of Train No. 12004 (LJN SWRAN SHTBD)
Step 6 : Checking the Availability and Proceeding to Book E-Ticket
We can see that the currently 321 Seats are Available in Chair Car(CC) of Train No. 12004 (LJN SWRAN SHTBD). You can also check the Total Fare.
So, We can proceed to book our Ticket by Clicking on Book Now
IMPORTANT NOTE : We can see that on 20-06-2015, the availability status is GNWL23/WL16. It Means that the Chair Car(CC) of Train No. 12004 (LJN SWRAN SHTBD) on 20-06-2015 is in Waiting List. It is not advisable to Book a Wait listed ticket Online. If your Reservation is not Confimed till the date of journey, your ticket will automatically be Cancelled and the amount will be refunded to your Account. However, if you book a Waitlisted Ticket Offline from Railway Reservation Counter, you can travel with that ticket with the Current Ticket Status.
Step 7 : Filling up the details in the Railway Reservation Form
Filling up the Details of the Passengers :
- Enter your Full Name
- Enter you Age
- Select your Gender
- Select your Birth Preference
- Select the Meal Plan
- Check on the Box (If you are a Senior Citizen)
- Enter your Aadhaar Number (Optional)
Filling up the Details of Children below 5 years (Tickets will not be issued to them) :
- Name of the Child
- Age of the Child
- Gender of the Child
Check on Consider for Auto-Upgradation box (It is a free service)
Select any Booking Preference (If you have any)
Enter the Capcha Image and the Mobile Number (On which you want to receive SMS of your Reservation)
Scroll at the bottom of the Page, Click on “Next” to proceed for Payment
Step 8 : Finishing the Payment from Payment Gateway and Printing the Ticket
The final Step is to make the Payment using your Credit/Debit Card or by Net Banking. Once your payment gets processed, you will get your reserved ticket details. You can check your ticket in the Email Address, as an SMS in your Mobile Phone. Also, you can Print your Ticket & check Booked ticket History in the Home Page of IRCTC after your Login.
Note : You can also Cancel your Ticket from this Page. Also, you can check your Refunds for any tickets.
Note : Always carry a Government Issued ID Card while Travelling on an E-Ticket
