Very few people in the world are aware about their duties towards the society. Most of the people are just in the search of a better life for themselves and how to make their life more comfortable. This is a selfish approach and such people should take inspiration from Dr. Prakash Amte. Dr. Prakash Amte is a doctor by profession but instead of making money by practicing in the cities he decided to help the poor tribal people in the forests of Maharashtra.
Dr.Prakash Amte – The Real Hero of Tribals & the Needy
The journey began when Dr. Prakash Amte’s father asked him and his brother to accompany him to the Dandakaranya forests. The Dr. Prakash got to see the plight of the tribals and it was only then that he decided to stay in the forest and help the tribals live a better life.
When he reached the forests he saw that the tribal people had not much to eat and that is why they were malnourished. He also witnessed a great amount of poverty and illiteracy among them which was also the cause of their exploitation by the people who were educated and more civilian as compared to them.
Dr. Prakash decided to help the tribal people lead a better life by starting a project named Lok Biradari Prakalp. He started this project in 1973 for helping in the development of the people from Madia Gond. This tribe was living in the forests of Gadchiroli. It was due to his project that Lok biradari Prakalp Davakhana was established. This Davakhana which means medicine center was able to provide medical assistance to the tribal people. It was a heroic act of Dr. Prakash that he stayed in the forest to provide medical aid to the people even when there was no electricity in those times. For almost 20 years he performed surgeries to help the tribal people and today an excess of 40,000 receive medical facility because of the efforts made by Dr. Amte.
This area has a school too by the name of Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram. This school has as many as 600 students enrolled in it.
Not only humans are benefitting from Dr. Amte. There are other living beings too who have found shelter in the loving care f Dr. Amte. He has even opened up an orphanage for the young ones of the anmals who were killed by the villagers while hunting. It is known as animal ark. Many a time the villagers would give away the captured young ones in exchange of the food grains.
Baba Amte has been recognized worldwide along with his wife Dr. Mandakini Amte who was always supportive of Baba Amte. The couple has received Ramon Magasaysay Award for their contribution to the community in 2008. In 1995 they had a postal stamp issued by the state of Monaco. Dr. Prakash was awarded Adivasi Sewak Award by Maharashtra Government where are the Government of India honored him with Padma Shri Award.
Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni starrer biopic made n the life of the couple was released in 2014 by the title of “Dr. Prakash Baba Amte: The Real Hero.” This man is the living example what can be achieved by working for the betterment of the society.
